Socialism is back.
And judging by the reaction in some Republican circles, so is the Soviet Union.
There is just one problem. Americans embracing socialism may not be talking about the socialism Republicans think they’re talking about.
MAJORITY OF AMERICANS BROADLY REJECT SOCIALIST IDEOLOGY EVEN AS FAR LEFT SURGES TO POWER
And if we don’t understand that, we’re going to miss one of the most important lessons of this election.
I’m a researcher and strategist. I spend my life studying what people believe, why they believe it, and how the same words can mean wildly different things to different people.
And right now, there may be no word in American politics more misunderstood than socialism.
To many Republicans, socialism means communism. Government control. Breadlines. Moscow. A dreary existence in which everyone is equally miserable except the people running the government.
To many Democrats, it means something else entirely.
Affordable healthcare. A decent retirement. A fair shot at getting ahead. An economy where billionaires don’t get every break while everyone else gets the bill.
Same word. Different movie.
And the polling is remarkable.
SOCIALISM SURGES AMONG DEMOCRATS AS PARTY LEADERS REJECT DSA AGENDA: ‘PACK OF FOOLS’
According to Gallup, 65% of Democrats have a positive view of socialism. So do 45% of independents. Only 14% of Republicans agree.
But here’s the really interesting part.
When Gallup asked Americans what they actually liked about socialism, Democrats and independents talked about access to basic services, economic equality, and a stronger safety net.
They weren’t describing the Soviet Union.
They were describing a country where ordinary people can afford to live.
Now, that doesn’t mean socialism is simply another word for fairness. It is a real economic philosophy with real policy implications, and Americans have legitimate disagreements about what government should own, control, regulate, and provide.
But if we’re going to have that argument, shouldn’t we first make sure we’re having the same conversation?
Because right now, one side is warning about Vladimir Lenin while the other is worried about the price of lettuce.
And the lettuce is winning.
The irony of it all is that Trump messaged this before the Democrats did. He understood something fundamental about American voters in 2016.
People were angry.
They believed the system was rigged. They believed the powerful were getting richer while everyone else was falling behind. They believed Washington had become a private club where the members took care of themselves and sent the bill to the rest of the country.
Trump promised to drain the swamp.
He promised to fight for the forgotten man and woman.
He promised to take on an establishment that had stopped listening.
It was an extraordinarily powerful message.
And now Democrats are making a strikingly similar argument about an economy that favors the wealthy, a political system that protects insiders, and ordinary Americans who can’t seem to get ahead.
The vocabulary is different. The policy prescriptions are different. But the underlying frustration sounds awfully familiar.
The swamp is still there. The rent is still due. The grocery bill is still too high.
And voters are still asking the same question.
Who’s fighting for me?
That is the question both parties should be trying to answer.
SOCIALISM’S GROWING APPEAL MEETS AN AWKWARD REALITY CHECK ON COLLEGE CAMPUS
Not whether they can attach the most frightening label to the other side.
Not whether they can win a debate about economic philosophy that most Americans haven’t had since freshman year.
But whether they can make life more affordable, opportunity more accessible, and government more accountable.
Because here’s what politicians consistently underestimate.
Voters don’t experience the economy as an ideology.
They experience it at the grocery store. At the pharmacy. When the mortgage payment comes due. When their children graduate from college with debt and move back into their childhood bedrooms.
DEMOCRATS SAY THEY’LL MAKE LIFE AFFORDABLE. YOUR WALLET MAY DISAGREE
You can tell someone they’re living under capitalism or socialism or democratic socialism.
They’re still going to want to know why a carton of eggs costs so much.
And before Republicans assume that attacking socialism is sufficient to win back voters, they might consider what those voters believe they’re supporting.
You can oppose government ownership of industry and still believe Americans deserve affordable healthcare.
You can support free enterprise and still think the economic system is tilted toward the wealthy.
You can believe deeply in capitalism and still wonder why working hard doesn’t seem to get you as far as it used to.
LIBERAL HOT SPOT RESIDENTS CAN’T AGREE ON WHAT SOCIALISM MEANS AS FAR-LEFT MOVEMENTS GAINS STEAM
These aren’t necessarily contradictions.
They’re the complicated, sometimes messy beliefs of real people.
And they are exactly why persuasion remains possible.
The lesson of this election isn’t that America has suddenly become socialist.
It isn’t that capitalism has lost.
JONATHAN TURLEY: SOCIALISM IS BACK IN STYLE AND DEMOCRATS ARE BUYING THE PITCH
And it certainly isn’t that every candidate who talks about fairness has discovered some magical formula for political success.
It’s that the argument over what fairness means, and who is delivering it, is very much alive.
And that argument cannot be won simply by shouting a word louder.
There is an important lesson here for Democrats, too.
A positive view of socialism is not a blank check for every policy proposed in its name. Americans can support a stronger safety net while remaining deeply skeptical of government bureaucracy, higher taxes, or promises that sound wonderful until someone explains how much they cost.
The label doesn’t do the work.
The idea has to.
That’s the part I hope both parties understand.
For Republicans, the challenge is to explain how their vision of free enterprise can deliver the affordability and opportunity people are demanding.
For Democrats, the challenge is to demonstrate that their promises of fairness can produce real results without creating a whole new set of problems.
Neither side gets to skip the hard part.
DEPROGRAMMED: SHE WAS ALL IN FOR SOCIALISM – UNTIL THE ‘RED FLAGS’ BECAME IMPOSSIBLE TO IGNORE
Because Americans aren’t asking for a lecture on economic theory.
They’re asking for a fair shot.
And here’s the irony.
The political language that helped propel Donald Trump to the White House — fighting for forgotten Americans, challenging powerful insiders, and taking on a rigged system — is now being echoed by some of the very Democrats who built their political identities opposing him.
Different messengers. Different solutions. Familiar frustration.
Perhaps the most important question coming out of this election isn’t whether America is embracing socialism.
Perhaps it’s whether either party fully understands why so many Americans feel the economy isn’t working for them.
Because you don’t defeat an idea by attacking its name. You defeat it by offering people something better.
And you don’t win lasting support by telling voters what they should be afraid of.
You earn it by giving them something to believe in.

The American people aren’t asking for a return to Moscow.
They’re asking for a country where hard work pays off, opportunity isn’t reserved for the well-connected, and getting ahead doesn’t feel like winning the lottery.
Call that fairness. Call it opportunity. Call it the American Dream.
Just don’t make the mistake of thinking that winning an argument over the word socialism means you’ve answered the people who find it appealing.
Because the next election won’t be decided in a political science classroom.
It will be decided by Americans who want to know whether their lives are getting better.
And they are going to listen to whoever has a convincing answer.
