You check your credit score, see nothing unusual and assume your identity is safe. But what if someone has already stolen your personal information and your credit report shows absolutely nothing? That’s entirely possible.
Credit monitoring can help detect certain types of identity theft, particularly fraud involving new credit accounts. However, criminals can also target your existing bank accounts, retirement savings, government benefits and phone number without triggering a traditional credit alert. As a result, a clean credit report can give you a false sense of security. Here’s what credit monitoring can catch, what it might miss and how to better protect yourself.

IDENTITY THEFT PROTECTION IS CHANGING: WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Credit monitoring tracks changes to your credit file. Depending on the service, it can alert you to suspicious activity involving your credit history.
Common alerts include:
These alerts can help you discover new account fraud before the damage grows. However, credit monitoring depends on information that lenders and other companies report to credit bureaus. Therefore, it cannot reliably detect identity theft that occurs entirely outside the credit reporting system.
Criminals have several ways to misuse your information, steal money or make you more vulnerable to fraud without triggering a traditional credit monitoring alert. Here are six situations worth watching for.
A criminal gains access to your existing checking account, savings account, retirement account or payment app. Because the account already exists, the takeover may never appear on your credit report. Instead, you might first discover the theft through an unfamiliar transaction or a notification from your financial institution.
Someone uses your Social Security number to file a fraudulent tax return or claim government benefits. You may receive an IRS notice about a tax return you never filed. Alternatively, you could discover unemployment benefits claimed in your name. Neither situation necessarily changes your credit score.
A thief uses your health insurance information to receive medical care, prescriptions or equipment. You might then receive bills for services you never used. Even worse, someone else’s medical information could end up in your records. Traditional credit monitoring generally will not detect the misuse itself, although unpaid debts could eventually create other financial complications.
Criminals may convince your mobile carrier to transfer your phone number to a SIM card or device they control. Once they have your number, they may intercept certain verification codes and attempt to access your accounts. A sudden loss of cellular service could be an early warning sign, especially if you did not request a change.
A scammer tricks you into authorizing a wire transfer, sending money through a payment app or purchasing gift cards. Because you initiated the payment, even under false pretenses, traditional credit monitoring may have no indication that anything happened. Your financial institution might have separate fraud detection systems, but those protections vary.
Your name, phone number, address and other personal details may appear on people-search websites or data broker databases. Criminals can use that information to create convincing phishing messages or impersonation scams. Although the exposure itself does not necessarily mean someone has stolen your identity, it can make you a more attractive target. The Federal Trade Commission identifies unauthorized bank withdrawals, unfamiliar medical bills and fraudulent tax filings among the warning signs of identity theft.
SOMEONE COULD HAVE OPENED AN ACCOUNT IN YOUR NAME. CHECK NOW
A credit score provides a snapshot of your creditworthiness based on information in your credit file. It does not show every account you own, or every place someone might use your personal information. For example, someone could access your retirement account while your credit score remains unchanged.
Similarly, criminals might use your phone number to get into an existing account without ever applying for credit. That’s why it’s important to review your actual credit reports rather than relying on your score alone. Even then, you’ll need to check your other accounts separately.
Fortunately, you can look for suspicious activity without paying for an expensive monitoring service. Start with these six habits.
Check your bank statements, investment accounts, retirement accounts and payment apps for unfamiliar transactions. Also, enable transaction and security alerts whenever your financial institutions offer them.
Pay attention to IRS notices about returns you did not file or income from employers you don’t recognize. You can also review your federal tax account through the official IRS website at irs.gov/ . You can also request a free six-digit Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) from the IRS. This helps prevent someone else from filing a fraudulent federal tax return using your Social Security number. The IRS issues a new IP PIN each year.
Review your earnings history periodically to see whether it matches your actual employment. You can access your information through your my Social Security account at ssa.gov/myaccount. Unexpected earnings may require further investigation.
Look for unfamiliar medical appointments, prescriptions, procedures or insurance claims. If something looks suspicious, contact your health insurance company or medical provider directly.
Ask your carrier about account PINs, port-out protection and SIM swap safeguards. Additionally, consider using an authenticator app or security key instead of text-message verification when available.
Search for your name, phone number and address to identify information exposed through people-search websites. You can request removal from individual sites or consider a reputable data removal service.
Pro tip: Choose one day each month to review your accounts and important records. You can combine it with a bill-payment routine to make the habit easier to maintain.
Credit monitoring remains useful, but it cannot catch every type of identity theft. Some identity theft protection services offer broader monitoring that can help identify suspicious activity involving financial accounts, personal information and online accounts. However, the features and level of protection depend on the provider and plan you choose.
Before signing up, compare the features, coverage limits and costs. Pay attention to which financial accounts qualify for monitoring and whether the service offers restoration assistance if identity theft occurs. See my tips and best picks on Best Identity Theft Protection at Cyberguy.com
Remember: No identity theft protection service can prevent every scam or detect every instance of fraud. These services work best alongside strong passwords, multifactor authentication, account alerts and regular reviews of your financial statements.
If you suspect someone is using your information, act quickly. You do not need to wait for a credit monitoring alert.
You can also review your credit reports at AnnualCreditReport.com. The FTC confirms that free weekly online reports are available from the three nationwide credit bureaus.
I always encourage people to keep an eye on their credit, but I wouldn’t rely on a credit score to tell me whether my identity is safe. Someone could be accessing an existing financial account or misusing personal information without causing any immediate change to that score. That’s why I recommend checking financial statements, turning on account alerts and taking advantage of additional safeguards when they’re available. Identity theft protection services can provide another layer of monitoring, but you still need to pay attention to activity in your accounts.
When was the last time you checked your bank accounts, medical statements or phone account for signs of identity theft rather than relying on your credit score? Let us know in the comments below. Let us know by writing to us at Cyberguy.com
